چکیده

Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) are a group of organic pollutants widely distributed in the atmosphere and well known for their carcinogenic mutagenic properties. Over last two decades, research about atmospheric PAHs has been focused urban industrial areas, while less attention given to rural areas. This study aims contribute filling this gap by analyzing levels, sources associated health risks particulate coastal southwestern Europe (Portugal). A total 132 PM10 aerosol samples were collected over 3-year period, from 2014 2016, with high-volume sampler analyzed 7 high-performance liquid chromatography. The global average sum concentrations (?PAHs) was 0.320 ± 0.597 ng/m3. Benzo[b]fluoranthene dominant congener majority samples, an contribution 25% ?PAHs. seasonal trend repeatedly observed period higher during autumn winter months. HYSPLIT model used examine air mass transport pathways into sampling site, revealing that changes frequency continental trajectories key factor explaining variation PAHs. Model runs also indicated fast-moving masses more efficient at dispersing emitted surrounding region than slow-moving similar origin (marine or continental). concentration benzo[a]pyrene, powerful human carcinogen, found be 0.044 0.098 ng/m3, approximately orders magnitude lower values previously recorded most polluted European atmospheres. Diagnostic ratio analysis suggested mobile stationary combustion equally contributing load estimated lifetime lung cancer risk below health-based guideline level, indicating low development inhalation exposure particle-phase

Transport of Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbons in a Calcareous Wetland Soil

Knowledge of transport and degradation of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) is important in assessing PAH contamination of soils and water resources. The transport of naphthalene, anthracene, pyrene and phenanthrene was determined in a contaminated calcareous soil obtained from the Shadegan wetland (Khozestan, Iran) considering a column study in laboratory conditions. The PAHs were added ...

Biodegradation of Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbons (PAHs) in Petroleum Contaminated Soils

Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons are a class of potentially hazardous chemicals of environmental and health concern. PAHs are one of the most prevalent groups of contaminants found in soil. Biodegradation of complex hydrocarbon usually requires the cooperation of more than single specie. In this research biotreatment of PAH (phenanthrene) was studied in a solid-phase reactor using indigenou...

Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons, polychlorinated biphenyls, and chlorinated pesticides in background air in central Europe – investigating parameters affecting wet scavenging of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons

Concentrations of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs), polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs), and chlorinated pesticides (CPs) were measured in air and precipitation at a background site in central Europe. ∑ PAH concentrations in air and rainwater ranged from 0.7 to 327.9 ng m and below limit of quantification (< LOQ) to 2.1× 10 ng L. The concentrations of PCBs and CPs in rainwater were < LOQ. ∑...

Source Apportionment of Particle Bound Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbons at an Industrial Location in Agra, India

16 U.S. EPA priority polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) were quantified in total suspended ambient particulate matter (TSPM) collected from an industrial site in Agra (India) using gas chromatography. The major industrial activities in Agra are foundries that previously used coal and coke as fuel in cupola furnaces. These foundries have now switched over to natural gas. In addition, use of...

Sources and transformations of particle-bound polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons in Mexico City

Understanding sources, concentrations, and transformations of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) in the atmosphere is important because of their potent mutagenicity and carcinogenicity. The measurement of particlebound PAHs by three different methods during the Mexico City Metropolitan Area field campaign in April 2003 presents a unique opportunity for characterization of these compounds a...
